1 So far no. They seem to be doing ok, just the regular ups and downs of the stock market.
Vanguard makes their money by managing mutual funds that are based on stock market ups and downs. Your investment with them will fluctuate with the stock market, but the company itself is sold as a rock and is not going anywhere. What got these other companies into trouble is that they made mortgage loans (or bought mortgage bonds) and the value of the mortgages went to crap, causing the companies to make good on the money.
This is a totally different business than what vanguard does, which is stock market indexing into mutual funds. Bottom line, Vanguard acted conservatively and is doing very well. Lehman (and others) got greedy and got their body parts chopped off.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
