Isn't banning gay marriage against the 1st amendment?

If your First Amendment supports discrimination and bigotry then it should be challenged. The UK is currently considering making same sex marriage legal with the provision that no church or organisation be forced into performing such ceremonies because of their religious beliefs. Sounds like a grown up way of doing things to me.

No. A priest can choose to not perform a ceremony. Now with that, it depends on the 10th Amendment.

In some states like Oregon, yes, it is possible that you must under the Oregon Equality Act of 2007. In other states such as likely most of the south, you may be able to refuse. Depends on state laws and such, unless we update the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to add sexual orientation on the list.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
