Christmas was mosstly invented by Coca Cola to persuade people that it was ok to drink their product in winter as well as summer. Most of what we consider "Christmas spirit" came out of Hollywood in the 40s and 50s, and most of that was invented for Bing Crosby movies. Life then was quite different from now.
Houses all had porches in front. Some families would sit on the porch in the evening and some people would stroll along the streets, and that is how neighbors met and maintained a community. Radio brought the families inside to listen to great speakers and great music.
Hallmark Cards sponsored a concert every week and they didn't even bother to run commercials. Everybody knew it was from Hallmark, "When you care enough to send the very best," and commercials would have been tacky. It was in the morning, and schools would stop classes and turn on radios so the students could listen to the music.
Stores were all run by local people, and the name on the front was usually an institution. Any company with more than one store advertised itself as if it were an institution. Every store had Christmas ornaments boxed with care and stored all year for the occasion.
The day after Thanksgiving they all got out their ornaments and hung them with care. No posters. Only movies and circuses had posters.
Why so much work, you might ask. Well, that was life. Everybody had plenty of time and money to support the lifestyle, and there was no other lifestyle to replace it.
It had to be choked out, the money stolen by inflation, and the time stolen by high taxes. Now you have Lightmas. Lights are so cheap that one church hangs a million of them in the trees at their playground in Tennessee, formerly known as Twitty City.
So there you have it. The spirit has been replaced by flashing lights, and the decorations have been replaced by posters with pictures of decorations. And people are starting to realize that it never had anything to do with Christ anyway.
It was always Lightmas, even before we knew how to make light bulbs.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
