This could very well be heat-related. Try blowing hard into the laptop's heat exhaust vent or spraying it with an air duster to clear it out, and that may fix your problem. As others have mentioned though, these kinds of problems can be caused by almost anything in an older laptop.
The problem probably isn't your hard drive, as that would be making clicking noises and/or long freezes while you're working on the system, though I can't discount it completely. It could be the motherboard, possibly the solder joints beginning to weaken from the chipset or CPU. It could be your RAM beginning to fail, which could be diagnosed with Memtest86, just google it.
