Looking for travel/student insurance recommendations My daughter will be traveling and studying abroad starting this summer, and we're shopping for supplemental (mostly health) coverage. After hours of web searching, it's really hard to sort out who's legit. There seem to be a lot of companies that present well on a web page, but look sketchy on closer examination.
Have you either had good experiences with a particular insurer, or do you know where I can find good ratings for this kind of thing? Thanks! Asked by HarpOnMe 43 months ago Similar questions: travel student insurance recommendations Games & Leisure > Travel.

Check with your auto insurance company Almost all of the major auto/homeowner insurance comapanies also offer insurance for travel. You should talk to your insurance agent. If they don't offer it themselves they will likely know exactly who to direct you to.
You may pay slightly more than you would for some fly by night online company, but you definitely will feel better about it. Your insurance agent will also likely know your needs a bit more than the generic online insurance. They can explain the options in plain english, and provide you with the documents to read on your own time.
One thing to make sure of is that they cover the length of time your daughter will be away. Many of the normal travel policies only cover up to 6 months of travel at a time. Another great option that I saw on one policy was a political unrest URL1 many cases when there is political unrest in a foreign country it will not be possible for your daughter to evacuate via normal routes.
She may have to make use of other alternative, and often very expensive, options. Such a rider on the policy would reimburse her the costs of that evacuation. An example of that was the sudden war in lebanon a couple of years ago. Many foreign nationals were stuck in lebanon with no way out.
At least in the case of Canada, the government contracted companies to go in and get the citizens to safety, but then sent a bill to them for the trip. This often totalled over $10k. If your daughter is travelling in countries where political unrest is even a potential possibility she should consider that option.
Remember that the state department website will show you the travel advisories for foreign countries. The worse the security rating, the more the cost of the insurance. If you don't like the price or options you get from your own insurance agent, then visit other reputable agents in your community.
