Looking to get a puppy as a companion to our 4 year old female dog. Should we get a male or female? We recently had to say "goodbye" to our 13 year old female dog and remaining dog (female) misses her companionship.

Male dog is best I have found in my past experiences that dogs of the opposite sex get along the best, followed by males and then females. I foster for rescue, and when you have more than one female, there is sometimes trouble! The best bet though, is if you can let your female pick a companion.
All dogs have different activity levels, and it is best to match that.
For your 4 year old female, I'd go with a male. I’m so sorry about your loss. I lost my 11 yo old not too long ago, and a while back, my 14 year old.So I understand how you feel.
I do believe the best thing is to get another dog as soon as you’re ready. This is just my opinion, but I always prefer to have a male and female, even though there are times when I’ve had two males. Some people find that two females together can be scrappy and fight for dominance.
I know that when dogs are spayed and neutered, they have a better chance of getting along. I guess I don’t have any real specifics for why I prefer a male and female, it just feels right to me. Good luck on whatever you choose!

I always recommend keeping the same sex Otherwise you get mating issues and... well, it's not fun. The only problem with the same sex is dominance issues, but I'll take that over the other kind :) Sources: My opinion .
I would get a female pup I would go to the pound and get a female pup. I would take my dog with me to the pound to "interview" the new dog before I bring it home. Make sure that they get along.
I would look for a pup that will be about the same size and temperment as the one you are replaceing. You may even find a older dog at the pound that will get along with your dog and not need to go through training a puppy. I would never mix sexes on dogs unless they are both spayed.... you do not want to get any suprize puppys.
Sorry for your loss hope this helps Sources: life .
Unless you are set on a breed of dog, you may want to consider... Going to a shelter, most will let you take home a dog for a test run to see if they will get along.
Is this normal?" "My 6 year old male dog is mounting my 9 month old male puppy and acting as though he is a female in heat.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
