For starters, you don't want to move to San Antonio proper - you want to live in the outlying communities of which there are many. If you're going to work in San Antonio, you do like so many of us do, commute - for me it's 22 miles one way. Traffic here is HORRIBLE!
People DO NOT know how to drive! An air-conditioned car is a must. For that matter, when you find a place to live, make sure the a/c is in good working order - you're going to need it about 8-9 months out of the year.
Winter lasts about 2 weeks - and that's a long one! We actually had snow last Winter and it shut down everything. The snow was about 1/8 of an inch!
If you need a laugh, wait until we get snow or ice, turn on your TV to the local NBC outlet which loves to show this stuff and watch the demolition derby as people try to do 70 while driving on ice. (Driving around the barricades is a sport many people engage in.)Most of them should not even try to drive 70 on dry roads (did I mention people here don't know how to drive?). It also floods here when it rains - we're in the middle of a horrible drought right now and are under water restrictions and if it doesn't rain soon, we'll be in Stage 3 water restrictions.
(Whatever that means)Compared to the rest of Texas - San Antonio and environs is a much cheaper place in which to live. It's also one of the fastest-growing cities in the US - currently the second largest in Texas - and is 63% Hispanic. Be prepared for a good case of culture shock. As a Democrat, you'll fit in since San Antonio and Bexar (its pronounced "Bear" not Bex-Ar) County is predominately Democratic despite the fact that most of the US Reps from this area are Republicans (I haven't figured that out yet in 25 years).
Make sure your car has a CD player or something else because San Antonio radio sucketh big time! There's not a single station worth listening to except for - in small doses - one of the classic rock stations. The food here is great!
You'll develop a taste for Tex-Mex in no time and ask how you ever lived without it. Two kids: you didn't mention what grades - but the school systems here are like school systems elsewhere - cutting back and dumping teachers, but its not as bad as the rest of the country. If you're looking for colleges and universities, the area is loaded with them - The University of Texas at San Antonio (about 30,000 students) is probably the leader educationally (and I don't just say that because I teach there!) and definitely the cheapest.
There is a community college system as well, but it's kind of doing it's best to self-destruct. What does UU stand for? I don't know if that answers all your questions or not - I've just hit the highlights - (and a couple of the lowlights) - so if you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to contact me and I'll be glad to help you out.
Meanwhile, welcome to the area - and when are you moving down here? OldHippieHatesNewAV 54 months ago.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
