Ok, I know that every answer so far says Rivera, but there's a very strong case to make for Hoffman. I'll provide numbers. Ok, Rivera plays for New York, in the glorified media spotlight, but take a look at this.
In his career for the Marlins, he was a part of 32 wins and saved 2, 6.2% of their wins. In his career for the Padres, he was a part of 1183 wins and saved 552 gamed, 46.7% of their wins. And with the Brewers, he was a part of 157 wins and saved 47 games, 29.9% of their wins.
In total, Hoffman was a member of teams that won a total of 1372 games, with Hoffman saving 601 of those games for a total save percentage of 43.8% over 18 seasons. This includes his 2002 season, where a season in his prime was lost to an injury. Hoffman recorded 0 saves that season.
Let's go by his averages. He saved an average of 39 games per season, so if he would've played that season and gotten about 39 saves, that would bring his career total to 640. On the other hand, as a member of the Yankees, Rivera has been a part of 1604 Yankees wins, saving to date 587 games for a total save percentage of 36.6% over 17 seasons.
Rivera also never missed a season in his prime like Hoffman did. In short, Rivera has played 1 fewer season to date, counting this season, but he has been a part of 232 MORE wins in 1 fewer season. Look at the numbers.
Rivera has had over 200 MORE save chances than Hoffman, but he still has fewer saves to date that Hoffman. What I'm trying to get across is this: Hoffman didn't have the fortune to play for big time winning teams like Rivera has. Hoffman converted more saves in far fewer chances than Rivera has.
I'm not saying that Rivera sucks, but in my opinion those numbers makes Hoffman a better CLOSER than Rivera. Rivera may be the better PITCHER, but I think Hoffman is the best of the two as far as the closers role goes. I hope you can see my point of view Mariano Rivera pitched about 80 games as a setup man, picking up 5 saves Trevor Hoffman pitched about 67 games not as a closer, picking up 5 saves And as far as Hoffman's lost season goes, there is no way to tell if he would've gotten 39 saves that year or not, but he got 38 saves the year before and 41 the year after, so 39 saves that year could be a pretty good guess EDIT: I didn't mean to say save percentage.
And I know that not every win was a save situation. But when one team has won 232 more games, you're bound to have a lot more save opportunities. What I'm trying to show you is that Hoffman did more with less.
Hoffman saved a higher percentage of the wins he was a part of. Rivera's percentage is lower because he's had more CHANCES. Not save chances, just chances.
I'm allowed to say that I think Hoffman was better, and I provided numbers. It's an opinion question. And it's not like I said Rivera sucks, because I know he doesn't.
I'm not stupid. I'm just arguing my point of view. Get off Yahoo Answers if you're going to criticize people for having opinions that differ from yours.
In this case, I have to go with the flow and say Rivera. He has been dominating the league with only one pitche for the majority of his career which is pretty impressive. And to say that Mariano pitched in 200 more games than Hoffman, you have to remember that he wasn't the closer when he first came up.
He was a set up man which didn't give him that many opportunities to get a save. And a lot of those games, it wasn't a save opportunity, it was just a mere opportunity for him to get in a couple of pitches if he wasn't used for a few days. Even if Hoffman was healthy and pitched in 2002, there is no way to tell if he would of gotten 39 saves.
Yes it may have been his average but he could of been below that or above that. Mo still has all of this year and a contract for next year so he still could of surpassed hoffman if he would of pitched that year.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
