I have a 2001 Jeep Wrangler TJ with fat tires and auto tranny. Got into about 8" of soft sand chasing the wild horses on Corolla, NC beach and stuck. I had in 4x4-HIGH and dash shows "Part Time" and foot on the gas in forward (drive) and reverse and no movement in any of the tires.
Made no sense to me... tranny is apparently great with no band slippage or anything. What is happening? How do I correct?
Had everyone get out and my 16 year old daughter pushed the Jeep out with one hand (little pressure) and tires were moving again. Other that this incident I seem to be able to keep up with anything. If.... If the driveshaft got buried, that may have goofed things up. Either by direct friction, or its effect on the torque-splitting mechanicals. Or maybe the sand moved the driveshaft out of alignment and one of the U-joints bound up.
If you're going to do this a lot I'd have a good look-see at the U-joints and sliding splined shaft geometry. There may be something bound up or a little bit out of line, just enough so a little sand pressure causes things to sieze up.
2 No traction control that I know of but someone said that it is "Part Time" 4x4 and this allows it to make some kind of traction type adjustments on-the-fly. I was thinking that maybe somehow that has broken down or lost its mind or something.

3 Jeeps are very light-weight and traction is a problem. Bigger Claw Grip tires, lift, also a couple of heavy-duty bumpers-w/access. Will help.

IchtheosaurusRex replied to post #2: 4 If there is a computer controlling it, if it's getting data it doesn't know what to do with, it will do the wrong thing every time. I suspect that's it, but I don't know much about automated part-time AWD systems. I like the ones with a lever on the transmission hump; no computer better than the one between your ears.

I cannot shift out of park with my 2004 Jeep Wrangler.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
