They won't get sick just because it's chilly when they're carried across the street. Cold doesn't cause illness, bacteria and viruses do. You say they also have coats on.
I really don't see what more you need. In fact I'd say that the less stuff you wrap them in that you then have to take off them again, the less they'll be disturbed and the more likely they'll go back to sleep. That's our strategy when we drive back home after bedtime: put the kids in sleepwear and ONLY sleepwear.
