My car is using 1l of oil every 900~ miles, what can I check repair to sort this out?

I have spoken to one garage that told me to get a compression test to check the head gasket, however I then went to another garage and they told me I should change the valves. I have checked for leaks and I know there is none, however the smoke from the exhaust does have a light blue tint and oil seems to drip from it a bit! Go with shop number two. The color of the smoke is diagnostic. Blue smoke means you are burning oil. It's probably the valve seals and/or guides which need to be replaced.

The seals/guides leak oil into the combustion chamber while the car sits. Next time you start it up, the oil burns off resulting in smoke with a definite blue tint/color. Fixing the problem can be pretty expensive but letting the oil burn adds to pollution and costs something, too.

In addition, if you don't keep an eye on things you can destroy your engine by having too little oil to keep things lubricated. If the smoke is white, then you most likely have a leaky head gasket which allows radiator coolant to drip into the combustion chamber. The next time you start the car, it's burned off, producing a heavy white steam (almost to the point of smoke).

The head gasket should be replaced, otherwise you run the risk of blowing it while driving resulting in dumping a good deal of coolant into the engine followed by overheating if you don't shut the engine off. It is also embarassing to drive down the street emitting a cloud of white smoke that obscurs everyone else's view of the road. Been there, done that!

My first car had head gasket problems and it was supremely obvious. If it's black smoke then that's excess fuel burning off. This could be the sign of an overly rich fuel mixture or it might also be a leaking fuel injector.

While the car sits, gas leaks into the combustion chamber and the next time you start the car, it all burns off in a black puff of smoke. A leaking fuel injector should be replaced, although it's not life or death. Sources: My Experience with old (cheap) cars AND f-body.org/oldfaq/html/faq/ch5.html .

If it's high-mileage, say 150,000 or more miles, a certain amount of oil consumption is normal. Or at least acceptable, as the only way to fix it is with a major engine overhaul. Otherwise you might be a bit luckier if it's a case of leaking valve seals.

Do you get a puff of blue smoke when starting up the engine? That tends to indicate leaky valve seals, which are usually MUCH cheaper to replace, compared to an engine overhaul. One workaround is to change to thicker oil, either by adding a can or two of STP, or changing to like 10W-40 or even 10W-50 oil.

1 darwin, regarding your answer "Go with shop number two. ": Blue smoke it is! Not sure I should fix it though, Value of the car VS value of the repairs is a definite problem!

2 I had a car like that once. Fortunately, someone crashed into it and it was totaled so I got $1000 towards getting something that was smoke-free. I would never have been able to sell it without investing considerable cash into it and the trade in value was pretty much zip, which is why I say the accident was "fortunate."

Plus, no one was injured.

A head gasket has nothing to do with oil loss - typical rip you off garage. Your oil is either leaking or going out the exhaust. So you are ither leaking it or burning it - now it may leak all the time or just under pressure - just let it sit on some clean pavement and see if you see a lot of drips. If you park in the sme spot see of it has a lot of oil spots.

So it it is not leaking then it is coming out the exhaust and you can smell that plus the guy was right about blue smoke. Now at a liter per 900 moles you won't see a lot of smoke. Shut the car off and let it sit for 30 minutes, if you see a big puff of smoke form the exhaust when it staets the oil is leaking past the valve giudes and just needs rubber seals - no biggie, however if it is burning al the time it could still be valve seals or rings, Either eway it could be just one cylinder and pulling spark plugs will show you the dark wet looking oilly one.

The guy that told you valves was full of it because it would be valve seals, the valves would not cause oil burning. So again you are either leaking it or burning it unless it gets alot worse it is not worh fixing that little amount of oil unless it is as simple gasket leak on the valve covers or an oil sending unit.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
