My (less than one year old) computer is running slowly. As I type this, the computer lags behind. How do I fix this?

Spyware You're likely affected by Spyware. There are a number of free Spyware detection/removal programs available, or you can purchase one. I subscribe to Spy Sweeper from Webroot.
Adaware has a free version that is often recommended: lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php" rel="nofollow">lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php Spy Sweeper: webroot.com/ Sources: lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php" rel="nofollow">lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php PJinNH's Recommendations McAfee Virusscan New Version 2005, 9.0 Used from: $16.99 .
Check startup and running processes The most common cause of this I've seen is installed software bloat. I'd recommend downloading Spybot Search & Destroy. It has some nice tools for looking at what gets started on your system at startup (regardless if it is started in a config file or via multiple registry locations) and looking at currently running processes.
Try pairing down what is started up as much as possible and see if there is anything unexpected currently running. Another thing to try is disabling some services (many are unneeded for functioning of your computer). There are many guides available for doing this (one is Windows XP Professional Services Tweaking - others for other OS variants should be findable via Google)..
Lots of things could cause it You really don't give many details. The basic things you do when your computer runs slow is: Check your start-up files. On windows, go to start->run and type "msconfig" (all one word) and go to the start-up tab.
Most programs install bits of themselves to run when your computer starts, so that when you click their icon, they start faster. But they suck up system resources and with enough of them, you will notice a slow-down. If you don't use a program often, un-check its start-up files.(Leave any alone that you don't recognize--leave alone the ones for your printer and internet connection too.
) Run a virus scan. Run a spyware scan. If you don't have a spyware scanner, adaware is great and free.
Install a spyware blocker so new spyware can't be installed--update it often. Run disk clean-up and get rid of old files. Run the disk defragmenter.
Get more RAM if your computer can take it. RAM is cheap and nothing will boost your processing speed like upping the RAM. I won't use less than 1GB with XP; my home computer has 2GB.
If you don't know what you're doing with RAM chips or which to buy, ask a computer-savvy friend for help.
Spyware, adwares... viruses Most likely you have picked up a bunch of spyware, adware, or even computer viruses that may be lurking in the background and eating up your CPU clock cycles. Get a program to remove that stuff... check out download.com and look for free (license) stuff first. Some good free stuff out there for removing that junk.
Also then go to Accessories>System Tools and defragmentate your entire disk drive... this finds file fragments and pulls them together on your hard disk so your hard drive read head doesn't have to "hunt" for the pieces when you access a particular file. Then run (in same area) disk clean to get rid of old files and temporary files.... make sure you have some room left on your hard disk because often the hard disk is used as virtual memory and swaps from memory to disk may be made. You want to have a few MB available at all times.

It could be a virus, spyware, grayware or hackers. Whats your security like? When did you run all your security programs?
Go on line a run Trend Micro's HOUSECALL...its free and they are pretty good at finding things that others don't. If you have Norton AV... its a PIG....it uses way to many resources which can slow you down! I run my antivirus every week, I also have 3 other spyware programs I run every week and I do housecall every month.
I would also DEFRAG & SCANDISK.....if you haven't done this in a while it can slow your computer down to a crawl..

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
