My dishwasher still reaks even after the dishes are clean! How do I remove bad odors from the dishwasher... I checked to ensure no standing food was stuck anywhere, I ran a load with tang, I didn't try bleach because I wasn't sure if it was safe since I'd be practically eating off of it.

The tang somewhat resolved it for a little while. I need something to kill the smell or whatever is producing it. Any other suggestions?

Just a thought...some 'do-it-yourself' installers forget to put the P-trap in the drain pipe...allowing the sewer/septic gas to enter the dishwasher from the drain. Other than that...I'd let the dishwasher fill, add 1/2 cup of chlorine bleach to the water and run the full wash and rinse cycles. Tang is good for removing stains from the interior of the machine...whenever I'd start getting mineral stains, a light brownish tinge, to the white interior of my machine...running a cycle with tang would bring it back to sparkling white...and the orange smelled nice and fresh, too.

If the odor you're smelling is musty, moldy...you might want to check the rubber seal in the drain area of the bottom of the dishwasher. It may be leaking water under the unit, promoting mold growth on the floor beneath it...and when the final heat/dry cycle runs in the dishwasher...the heat makes the mildew smell more noticable. Check the drain line to your disposal I assume you have cleaned the filter, but if you haven't, go do that. If your dishwasher is like mine, it grinds up any food residue that's soft enough and expels it through a flexible line that taps into your garbage disposal. It has to pump the mess out (which could also be your problem, if the pump is not working right) into your disposal's reservoir - you can see this, and a lot of times it backs up into the sink, too, making a mess.

Anyway, if there is something stuck in the line, or if dreck from the garbage disposal is settling in there, it could be the source of the smell. I don't know if you are handy enough to pull the dishwasher out and replace the line, but it would be something I'd try. Sources: Homeowner .

Check down where the water drains and see if there is anything stuck there. There is a way to take that very bottom part apart and clean it. Perhaps something is stuck in the drain that isn't being pushed through when the water empties.

Also try running a bottle of white vinegar through, no dishes or soap and see if that helps. That can also be used on washing machines to remove soap residue.
