My Emprex 8GB flash drive was working just fine (has 4GB of data on it). Suddenly stopped working --can I recover data? I suspect something has gone wrong with the internal flash drive power circuit because the little red light does not come on.

Could be several different things And it really depends on the symptoms. You say that it "stopped working" - but what does that mean? Does the computer that you were using no longer recognize it?

Do you get the 'gong' sound when you insert it into the USB port? You might try plugging it into another USB port on that machine, or rebooting the machine. I've seen USB devices that are re-recognized after a reboot.

If that doesn't work, try connecting the thumb drive to a *different* computer. See if you can get to the files that way. That will establish whether the problem is the computer or the thumb drive itself.

However .. if none of the above help, then you have a different problem....the thumbdrive has shorted out. It isn's supposed to happen, and it is very very rare, but it can happen. Usually it happens when you just pull the thumbdrive out of the port without 'preparing' the device for extraction.

If it's shorted out, then you're cooked. I have never heard of a successful USB recovery. Once your chip is fried, then there's no going back.

1 I just had the exact same problem happen to my 8GB Emprex flash drive. I was using it on my PS3 and had just shut down the PS3. I reached for the flash drive and saw and heard a static spark on the Emprex metal case.My heart sank.

I plugged the Emprex back into the PS3 and turned it back on; no red light. Tried another port, computer upstairs; no red light. Computer here at work; no red light.

Now when I say no red light, the computers react like I plugged a popsicle stick in the port.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
