My family (2 Adults, 2 Children 15 & 13) have 2 weeks holiday and we need cheap places to go to in the midlands Help Us! I live in the midlands in the UK, we were going to go to wales but it was pouring down with rain so we've decided to go somewhere nearly everyday, we want something not too expensive, max. £60, so all theme parks are out, so any really good suggestions? It’s an interesting day out for a family, as kids see things they’ve never seen before, whilst parents get nostalgic for "The good old days" . There is certainly plenty to see and do, with lots of demonstrations, working machinery and transport, it's easy to find and not too expensive either..
2 As chance would have it, I wanted to take my best friend up there for a few days - to see where I grew up, etc. - and was absolutely appalled at the price of accomodation. (If you hadn't said that you live in the UK, I would have started with my standard apology for the gross prices for hotels and for eating out in this country, but I guess you know). Oh, maybe I misunderstood you ... reading the question a sedond time, it looks as if you're going to stay put but take excursions.
In that case, a few suggestions from my gleanings:- the Space Museum in Leicester is supposed to be great, gets rave reviews;- there's at least one Colliery Museum, located near Coalville or Snibston or those parts;- visiting Mount St. Bernard's Abbey is quite an experience - home to a group of Trappist monks, and all rather beautiful and well-situated;- I think there are a few Stately Gnomes within reach, and when I went to the Tourist website there was one that was offering a sort of son et lumiere in August;- Bradgate Park offers some very interesting walks, there's an association with Lady Jane Grey, and somewhere in there is the place where I lost my virginity, though I don't think they've put up a plaque yet. That's the best I can do from memory, but I do recall that there were two or three tourist websites that were worth poking around in. Good luck.

3 I was at the space museum at the weekend (because of bad weather). We were not impressed at all. Most of it was aimed at young kids, it's expensive (£12.00 each for adults, £38.00p for a family ticket) and most of the exhibits were very dated - 2 x 1960's rockets and some old space suits and a toilet spring to mind.
We looked forward to the visit and expected a much more state of the art exhibition, but stayed less than two hours and came away very disappointed.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
