It sounds like there may be something wrong in the motor. Blocked clearance sensors or a bind in the track could make it auto-reverse, but stopping partway up would indicate that the open setting has shifted - and most newer doors have a limit switch that to door hits when it is fully open.

If it is an older door, then it may still have open and close position sensors - and if things shifted while you were replacing the belt; then it may think 3/4 is all the way open, and when it hits the ground, it doesn't realize it is closed; so it thinks it needs to revers to keep from hurting someone.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
