My Granny has a cable from comcast that runs directly into her TV for basic cable. Does she need a box from comcast? Comcast said yes, doubling her bill from $17 to $36.

Those lying scum. You don't need a dang thing to watch basic cable. Comcast is just plain out deceiving in order to make a huge buck.

The only difference is with the box the channels may come in in the same order as in the TV guide, without it they may be in a somewhat jumbled order but most people can put up with that. If she ever wants any premium channels or pay-per-view mud-wrestling then and only then will she need the expensive set-top box. Oh, and without the box it is so much easier to program the VCR to record on schedule..

Wait Wait until the conversion to digital tv in February. If her reception is compromised, then look into options. The person you talked to at Comcast may not have been fully knowledgeable.

The box enables for higher tier channels, the tv signal comes straight through the cable. She should be okay. I'd wait until the conversion in February before spending any money.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
