Basically, black is more color and blonde is less color. To "dye" hair means to add color, and you'd have great difficulty adding "blonde" color to black and not having it look wrong. Therefore, most folks in your situation try bleaching the hair, which also looks wrong because getting hair to lose all of its color pretty much makes it disintegrate.
