My slipshod lifestyle/habits keep getting worse I have two or three good things to say about myself, but they don't amount to much. I am compassionate, right-brained (very artistic) and above average in intelligence. I have a few good educational accomplishments/credentials in spite of a bad start. In recent years I've become overweight (after doing well previously), developed diabetes and sleep apnea, become sluggish, slothful, extremely disorganized and spend a lot of time fighting through endless disorganization.
I have little or no tolerance for the heat and stay tired most of the time. I am consistantly very late for work, cannot seem to accomplish even the first step towards reaching any goals or getting out of this morass. A doctor prescribed adderall and it worked for a few days, before losing its effect.
I think much of my problem is I've poured most of my life into a dead-end job and endlessly caring for a disabled person who is well beyond my ability to care for, and she's grown extremely co-dependent on me. It sounds like hypothyroidism and/or adrenal exhaustion/fatigue. Both conditons are can be braught on by stress. I suffer from both.
Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the body lacks sufficient thyroid hormone. Since the main purpose of thyroid hormone is to "run the body's metabolism", it is understandable that people with this condition will have symptoms associated with a slow metabolism. Symptoms include Fatigue Weakness Weight gain or increased difficulty losing weight Coarse, dry hair Dry, rough pale skin Hair loss Cold intolerance (can't tolerate the cold like those around you) Muscle cramps and frequent muscle aches Constipation Depression Irritability Memory loss Abnormal menstrual cycles Decreased libido Hypothyroidism is completely treatable in many patients simply by taking a small pill once a day!
There are several types of thyroid hormone preparations and one type of medicine will not be the best therapy for all patients. Many factors will go into the treatment of hypothyroidism and it is different for everybody. Adrenal fatigue/exhaustion: When the adrenal glands are not functionining optimally, you can have a condition that is known as adrenal fatigue, or adrenal exhaustion.
Adrenal fatigue often develops after periods of intense or lengthy physical or emotional stress, when overstimulation if the glands leave them unable to meet your body's needs. Some other names for the syndrome include non-Addison's hypoadrenia, sub-clinical hypoadrenia, hypoadrenalism, and neurasthenia. Symptoms include: excessive fatigue and exhaustion non-refreshing sleep (you get sufficient hours of sleep, but wake fatigued) overwhelmed by or unable to cope with stressors feeling rundown or overwhelmed craving salty and sweet foods you feel most energetic in the evening a feeling of not being restored after a full night's sleep or having sleep disturbances low stamina, slow to recover from exercise slow to recover from injury, illness or stress difficulty concentrating, brain fog poor digestion low immune function food or environmental allergies premenstrual syndrome or difficulties that develop during menopause consistent low blood pressure extreme sensitivity to cold Both of these conditons can lead to more serious ones such (as you mentioned) as type II diabetes, mood disorders, fibromyalgia and other illnessess that aren't cureable. An endocrinologist is the best Dr. to see and then a psychiatrist.

1 I have too many of my own problems to care for hers. I see no end to this morass, and even little steps are drops in a tide turned against me. Nothing seems to be working. My doctor prescribes excercize and stuff like that over medication and other therape, but I don't have the energy or time-management skills to even work these into my lifestyle.
If I abandon the person I am helping (the girl with diabilities) She will likely not live long as there is no one else to care for her. Trust me, I've tried getting help for her for over three years. Now I'm in grave need of help myself, before I'm totally wiped out and die on the streets.

2 What a sad commentary. My heart breaks for you. Is this girl that you are caring for you wife?
Is there any part of the relationship that helps you, or is it totally one sided? What is she doing to help herself? At some point you have to become responsible to and for yourself.
Otherwise you will die along with her and that certainly serves neither of you. It sounds to me like your major problem is severe depression. There are treatments for this, but you have to start by wanting to help yourself.
I have many thoughts on the subject, but right now I'm late for an appointment. I will try to get back to you later tonight or tomorrow.

3 Yellowdog, I think you are very brave and intelligent. Please do not give up on yourself. You need to notify the girls family to take her off your hands.
You need to think about yourself and getting into a program or therapy group. I think this may be a very good option to get your life back on track and seek a better doctor that can sympathize with your current situation and help you better understand your condition and make some positive goals to achieve. I am not telling you this to get a pat on the shoulder, but I have admired your intelligence and wit.
Please do not think for a minute that you are useless or stupid. We all have problems, and believe me.. Somehow, I seem to look for the rainbow over the foggy water. Sometimes, I find it, and other times it's too blurry to see.
Bottom line is.. You have many friends here that care for you and will never turn their backs on you. Reach out and let them help support you during this difficult time. Excercise and take your medicine, and maybe make a chart or keep a daily journal of things that you have been doing and things that you need to get done.
Good luck and I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers, my friend! Big hugs! .

4 Thanks -- And I hope I DO hear from you again! NO,she is not my wife, but she wants to be. I didn't want a girlfriend when I started helping this girl.
The love I feel for her is more like intense compassion. I'd probably miss her if she were gone, but sometimes I WONder even that. It would devestate her but be a big relief to me.
There really aren't any romantic feelings, though she believes otherwise. I've dragged along with it, to my detriment. This young woman (who I write about occasionally on Askville) has taught me to see beauty in people whom I previously found very unlovely -- as a lot of them mooch off the system for people with viable disabilities and she is close to them.
All day I have been trying to accomplish cleaning out my work area and sleeping space, to no avail, miserable at the sweat and humidity even though it's not even that hot of a day, fighting to stay awake, and totally unable to focus on the task, desireing destractions, accomplishing virtually nothing.
