Some funny books... My daughter is nine, and here are some books that made her laugh out loud: Stink by Megan McDonald and Peter Reynolds (there’s a whole series of these) The BFG by Roald Dahl The Witches by Roald Dahl (Actually, just about everyting Roald Dahl wrote for children is great) The Sisters Grimm by Michael Buckley and Peter Fergusen (yeah, it’s about girls, but some of the other characters are boys AND it is really funny! Also a series) Superfudge by Judy Blume (all of the Fudge books are hilarious) Where The Sidewalk Ends or The Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein Oh Yuck! The Encyclopedia of Everything Nasty by Joy Masoff (gross and funny are synonyms to kids) Geronimo Stilton Secret Agent by Geronimo Stilton (Geronimo Stilton is a mouse and a detective) Your son might also like Calvin and Hobbes anthologies. My daughter dug up my old Calvin and Hobbes books, and loved reading those comics!

Just William ... still the best! I read my first William book when I was six and fell off the chair laughing. I don’t know whether their being set in England would stand in the way, nor the fact that they spanned forty years or so, but he is immortal; and if you thought it a good idea, you could use the English setting and the span of history to help him learn about a different country and different times.(There’s a great sociology thesis waiting to be written about the changes in English society as reflected in the William books).

Just make sure you get those that are illustrated by Thomas Henry - there was a brief flurry where the publisher used a different illustrator, converted the currency, and generally sucked the life out of them. (I've shown some, but there are lots and lots - and obviously some anthologies). Sports magazines, basket ball cards... my son liked goose bump books... but they are scary.

I am looking a children's reader that talks about nutrition. Are there such books?

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
