I am having the same problem at the moment with a WD usb HDD. The problem as I see it so far is the HDD it's self. Mine spins up but I can't see it.
I am going to remove it out of its case and try and put it in my laptop to run spinright over it. Good luck. One more thing does it open on another computer?
I can think of two things that you can try. First might be a problem that it is no longer given a drive letter. To check this you have to go into Disk Management.
You can do this by: Click Start>click Run, type compmgmt. Msc >>click OK>>In the console tree on the left, click Disk Management. If it shows up at the bottom it probably does not have a drive letter and you can right click on it and assign one.
A second option to try is to go into device manager and uninstall the drivers for that particular external HD. Unplug the device, then plug it back in so that the drivers reinstall. It could be a driver issue.
If neither one of these things work, please let me know your status I will suggest a few other things to get the drives fired back up again!
Try the USB port in the back of your computer. Also, as I wrote earlier, disconnect all other USB devices from your computer except your mouse and keyboard. Your external drive gets its power from your computer's USB port.
There is only a limited amount of power available from the internal USB hub. If you have several USB devices drawing power, you may exceed the capacity of the hub. When you connect your drive to a USB port, is there any indication (sound or popup) that Windows has detected that you connected it?
Please report any messages verbatim. Connected, open Device Manager, right click on the entry for USB controllers and click "scan for hardware changes." Do the same for each of the USB Root Hubs as well.
You may have already tried most of these suggestions. There are several "USB device not detected" hotfixes from Microsoft. Some of them are specific to certain service pack levels of Windows XP.
Was the hotfix you installed appropriate for your version of Windows? Have you installed sp3? There are many entries in the Microsoft Knowledge Base for Windows XP and "USB not detected."
Some may not apply to your configuration, so read them carefully before using. Please read it all the way through before using the automated fix.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
