It's always difficult, when the new hereditary monarch needs to prove he's fit for the job. First, a few items I’m sure merely slipped your mind: * America’s options are limited to military response, or persuading others to work against North Korea. We have practically no trade with North Korea.

The last time we bought from them was December 2004, when we imported about $1.4 million worth of goods. While there has been a trickle of goods erratically flowing their way since, it is pretty much entirely food donations. * The last time the US tried a military response to North Korea, we wound up fighting North Korea, China, and the Soviet Union.

On the battlefield, we had 480,000 Americans facing 1,212,000 troops from those three countries. * While Russia and North Korea haven’t been friends lately, those running the Russian Republic won the last election, in part, by reminiscing about the Good Old Days of the Soviet Union. Providing a couple of motor-rifle divisions with live-fire practice against the US Army is almost guaranteed to win more votes for the Russian politicians we really wish had lost the last election.

* The sole US Army division in Korea appears to consist of one brigade in Korea, one in Pakistan, one in Colorado, and one in Washington State. In short, we have about 3,000 soldiers pretending to be 17,000 soldiers in Korea. Facing this, North Korea’s army is about double the US Army’s strength.

The cupboard is bare. We barely have enough troops to fight the two wars we already have, let alone adding a third to the mix. But don’t take my opinion.

We are unable to provide a sustainable tempo of deployments for our Soldiers and Families. Soldiers, Families, support systems, and equipment are stretched and stressed by the demands of lengthy and repeated deployments, with insufficient recovery time. Equipment used repeatedly in harsh environments is wearing out more rapidly than programmed.

Army support systems, designed for the pre-9/11 peacetime Army, are straining under the accumulation of stress from six years at war. Overall, our readiness is being consumed as fast as we build it. If unaddressed, this lack of balance poses a significant risk to the All-Volunteer Force .

. . (The obvious response to a failure of the all-volunteer force, of course, is resorting to a draft.

) And let us not forget, war is North Korea’s proposed response to anything and everything that bothers them. This, I estimate, is a war we can only win by resorting to the draft, and engaging in the massive military build-up that we expected (but never happened) on 9/12/2001. On the other hand, China is finally sounding like they’re upset with North Korea.

And China is the best friend (or nearest thing to a friend) that North Korea has left. Although it’s indirect and slow, persuading China to pressure North Korea is the only possibility for success I can see. ****************************************************************************** An important question is why this came up now.

While it’s always possible that part of the motivation is challenging the new American President, the fact is that Kim Jong-Il is old and sick and ready to retire. For his own reasons, he wants to hand rule over to his youngest son, the 25-year-old Kim Jong-Un. For reasons that I hope are obvious, he looks younger and less ready to rule than Obama did this time last year.

In order to appear strong to North Koreans, Kim Jong-Un needs to act tough to American provocations. Even if he has to kidnap Americans on China’s side of the border to manufacture the provocation. The weakness of this plan, is that he’s backed himself into a corner: if we respond militarily, he has no choice but to strike.

And the easiest strike for him to make, would be to invade an ally the United States is sworn to defend: South Korea. With something like 10,000 artillery pieces continuously aimed in Seoul’s direction (out of an inventory of 11,200 artillery pieces), we can expect South Korea’s capital to be reduced to piles of smoking rubble in three or four hours. I’m not saying this is a war the United States cannot afford to win.

I’m saying that this decade has shown the United States is unwilling to pay the bill. We were unwilling to significantly expand the military for the Global War on Terror, which is why the military is stretched unwisely thin. ****************************************************************************** As for the launch, I'm reasonably confident that more than enough Aegis cruisers will be along the flight paths toward Hawaii and Alaska, to destroy the rocket if it looks like it'll hit US territory.

Remember, this is the same class of ship that shot down a satellite, so they're probably sufficient for the job. 2 I can't believe that North Korea would ever do anything major to tick us off. Granted, they are ruled by a nutjob, but he does not have the religious fanaticism of the Fundamentalists. They can claim God is on their side, so that would make their "David vs Goliath" scenario work.

All he has is a huge ego, and that can only take him so far.

That belief, coupled with the fact that he is totally full court bozo, makes him a dangerous person indeed.

Planning to go to Vancouver for 4th of July weekend. Never been there. Any suggestions what I should do there?

" "President Obama criticises North Korea's ballistic missile launch. Is he right to do so? " "What do you think the U.S. and allies do about north Korea launching there "missile"?

" "After all the threats and "outrage", what will the world and the U.S. do about North Korea's missile launch? " "North Korea launched a long range missile last night just like they threatened. What's gonna happen now?

" "Will we go to war with North Korea? " "North Korea fired off another test missile making that five. What's up with them?

What should the U.S. do?

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
