Opened an AdSense account and now want to close it but keep my gmail address that was associated with the AdSense account. How do I do this?

There is no chance you can use an email to different adsense account. If you closed the adsense account than you can't use that email for the new adsense account. You can keep the email but you can't use it for your new adsense account.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
