Our interconnected smoke detectors are giving us false alarms. Only at night. No, I'm not cooking at the time either.
We moved into our newly built home in Nov 2003. About 5 months later, we started waking up to the shrill fire alarms. There was no fire, smoke or cooking.
Eventually, we removed all of them. After having our boys, we bought new ones and had no problem for a while. Now, at night they either go off or you hear them go off a single time as if someone had pressed "test/reset".
This is not the chirp you hear on low batteries. Is our house haunted or have any of you heard of this? I'm slowly removing the detectors again and would like to not have to, but all these false alarms- 2/month are driving me and my family nuts as well as making us ignore the possibility of there being an actual fire in our quest for quiet.HELP.

Your first thought to replace the detectors was correct. If this has not solved the problem, it could be caused by dirty detectors combined with temperature changes. You can try cleaning them with compressed air and/or vacuuming the detectors around their small vents.
All smoke detectors are prone to false alarms and nuisance alarms. 2 per months is excessive. If cleaning does not help, you could try a different brand, which could be expensive, but save a lot of lost sleep.

Here is the solution. The interconnected hardwired alarms use three wires, black and white for power and red to interconnect the alarms. The red wire must not have oxidation or paint on it or it will intermittently break the connection between the alarms and cause false alarms.
Clean all the red wires with Scotchbrite or emery cloth and twist together using pliers in a counterclockwise direction to facilitate the wire nut threading onto the wires. The power connections are at a high voltage and low current demand. Because of this they are not affected by minor oxidation or other foreign substance.
The interconnection circuit is a low voltage system that is easily affected by anything less than a good electrical connection.
I've heard of cities providing FREE smoke alarms/carbon monoxide detectors for residents. How can I get one?
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
