Pagination in MS Word: How to paginate starting with page 1 as a few pages in?

Use section break. With section break you can restart numbering pages on the particular section without linking to other sections. So make sure you don't link one section to previous section.

Section Break is under Pagelayout. To unlink section to the previous section, click your footer or header and there will 'link to previous' under Design. I'm talking about word 2007 or 2010.

This is something that you could do by using Sections in Microsoft Word. Insert 2 sections, one without and one with page numbers, the second section would be where your page numbers are going to start. By adding page numbers while the 2nd section is selected no page numbers will be added to the first.
