I keep hearing people say that they are not happy with any of the candidates from the Democrats or the Republicans. Do you think it is possible that a Democrat or Republican totally unknown (by the general public) will win a nomination then be elected? Do you think it possible that someone NOT a Democrat or Republican can be elected?

Easy Answer Not in this life time. McCain, Hillary or Obama will win, guaranteed. This is why.
A lot of people are not happy but they always represent the minority. Their are too many hard core Republicans and Democrats. The hard cores will vote Republican or Democrat, PERIOD.
They live eat and breath the party line. It is simply part of their lives. For example only, and I'm not kidding or funny here, I have a friend that is hard core Democrat.
He said that if McCain was running against a dog, and the dog had won the Democratic Nomination, he would vote for the dog. He always votes for the Democratic party because he is hard core Democrat, even if they don't have the same beliefs as him, it doesn't matter. And the point is, their are millions like him.
They have faith in the system and believe the system won't let them down so they will stand behind either the Democratic or Republican nominations. They believe their is strength in numbers and that is the only way to get your man elected. :-) Doc † .
Not possible.....(sorry bought the double move, lord help me I am not that smart) TARHEEL-Flippy says: no the way it's set up it is almost impossible to start a grass roots movement and have an unknowen nominated and elected across 50 states, and the media perpetuates this by only focusing on the front runners, reporting on unknowens only as some kinda joke, so the vast majority of us aren't sure who's out there becuase the media and money prevent us from knowing.....lord knows I would vote for somebody honest in a minute even though I disagree with them (jesse ventura or alan keyes) .
Not really. McCain is the presumptive GOP nominee. He would have to fall over dead for someone else to replace him.
And I can't imagine anyone being able to take enough delegate votes away from Hillary & Barack to even make a dent. An independent run is the only other possibility, and Bloomberg has stated he is on the sidelines in this one. So no, ain't gonna happen.
Unfortunately with the current system no! There are several factors that prevent any "unknown" or third party candidate from winning the election. The first factor is Money.
"Name recognition" IS important. People will not vote for somebody whom they haven't even heard about him/her. The United States is a HUGE country.
You need a huge amount of money to advertise yourself and get yourself known by people. Another factor that comes to mind is electoral college system. Remember 1992?
Ross Perot DID have money. He spent a lot of money. He ended up with 18.9% of votes but guess what.
He got ZERO electors! ZERO! He was just close to getting 1 elector in Maine.
That is how the electoral college system works. It favors two party system. Media is another problem, but I think that could be taken care of if there is a powerful third party candidate.
Debates is also another factor. Two parties make it hard for others to enter Presidential Debates. If ever this system is changed or replaced by instant run off system or popular vote system (which is highly unlikely at least in the next 50 or so years), we can hope others have a chance.
Otherwise there is no chance for others. Paradise. I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
