Well, darling, I refused to try to ban the Westboro Baptist Church from protesting at soldiers' funerals even though their actions and their agenda fill me with nothing but disgust and contempt. I agreed with the ACLU when they supported the right of the American Nazi Party to march through Skokie, Illinois, a suburb that was home to a large population of Jewish people, even though I loathe the American Nazi Party and all it stands for. I supported them because there is a difference between what is constitutional and what is in good taste.
We have constitutional rights, regardless of whether exercising them is in bad taste. I agree with you that this center could be seen to be in very poor taste indeed...but if embarrassment at the tastelessness of their plan doesn't stop the group in question, that is not a reason for legal entities to stop this construction. I'm not patronizing anyone.
I also don't say opposition to this center is racist - but I do say that denying them the right to build it because they're Muslim not only violates the Constitution...it smacks of intolerance. That intolerance is directed towards Americans because they have the same religion as people who committed an atrocity against this country...an atrocity in which people I knew died. The only way to defeat those terrorists who committed the atrocity on 9/11 is to be more - not less - tolerant of differences, clearly displaying the superiority of our open and democratic and fair and tolerant system over the medieval intolerance the terrorists want to impose.
I know things are heated, but I frankly don't appreciate having my support for my fellow citizens' Constitutional rights labeled as racist, because of some convoluted reasoning that assumes that I consider these citizens to be "ethnic," and I don't think that, after calling those who oppose you racists, you should then complain about ad hominem attacks. I don't want to be at odds with you, but on this, I think you've gone too far in your rhetoric.
No considering that Muslims are not are particular race, but consist of a group of different ethnicities. Should the Mosque be build there? No I really don't think it should, the American People have spoken, the Muslims should respect their request.
One question I have is, where is the money coming from? It better not be Taxpayer money because that would be wrong on so many different levels. You don't see the taxpayer money being put towards Catholic Cathedrals or Churches, Protestant Churches, &c.
, so why would we have to pay for something that Muslims want? Religion and State are separate. Another thing, if you agree with this mosque how would you feel about erecting a memorial at Pearl Harbor for all the Japs who died trying to kill our Soldier?
I personally think that the radicals will look at it as a small triumph.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
