The problem with killing Anwar al-Awlaki isn't that it's wrong to kill traitors. It's that the US government never demonstrated any evidence that al-Awlaki actually was a traitor. The point is that in order to give people the death sentence you actually have to present evidence that the person is actually guilty.
I have to wonder why I have to even say this, but it's not enough to simply assert guilt it must be demonstrated in a court of law. The current US drone assassination program isn't only shredding the constitution, it's taking the US law back to medieval ages to before Magna Carta which forbade rulers from killing their own citizens without demonstrating their guilt before a court of law. Edit: There's no laws against being a propagandist.
No-one has ever shown any evidence al-Awlaki was any kind of al-Qaeda officer or indeed had any connections with it. And it's actually legal according to current supreme court interpretations of US law to say "This government deserves to be overthrown". It's legal.
Nor does anyone think people should be prohibited from making the argument "This government is so corrupt that its overthrow is the only possible option". People only want other people besides themselves to not be able to make that argument when they disagree with the argument. But you see, there's a difference between disagreeing with someone and thinking it's illegal to say that.
After all, that very sentiment is enshrined in the US constitution which itself was an act of, by your use of the term, treason. So far no laws broken --> No right to impose the death penalty. And even if there was evidence of clear law-breaking for which the punishment is the death-penalty then great you go in front of a court to make your case.
You don't go acting judge, jury and executioner.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
