Hey If you enjoyed Martyrs then I suggest you check out some more French Extreme Wave...they are not conventional horror but the tone and atmosphere make them scarier than any monster movie could ever be, such as - À l'intérieur ( Inside ) by Alexandre Bustillo - High Tension otherwise known as Switchblade Romance by Alexandre Aja - Irreversible by Gasper Noe (not so much horror but very dark and amazing cinematography and still scared the **** out of me) - Frontier(s) by Xavier Gens - Calvaire by Fabrice Du Welz hmm I know there's more than that but can't quite bring them to mind I seem to remember seeing a very strange film about cannibalism but the title escapes me now. Now onto the next list Modern Horror - Orphan ( modern take on the old evil child tale done incredibly well) - The Signal - House of 1000 corpses and Devils Rejects by Rob Zombie - The Tripper (Acid soaked slasher film, cliche but a bit of fun) Surreal Horror - Eraserhead by David Lynch...and try find his earlier short films and college days work - Santa Sangre by Alexandre Jodorowsky (my suggestion is to roll a nice big j and sit back, but go in with an open mind, I found this movie poetic and haunting and beautiful and scary and wonderful all rolled into one) - Begotten by E. Elias Merhige (need a lot of patience for this art/horror but great nonetheless) - Eyes Without a Face by Georges Franju also try some films by Jan Svankmajer..he makes creepy visceral stop motion films..not exactly horror but they get under your skin B- Grade.
There is a great haunted house movie with George C Scott called " The Changeling" not at all related to the Angelina jolie movie that just came out. I would encourage you to check that out if you like a really scary haunted house movie. Stephen Kings IT is a great one as well and Stanley Kubrick's The Shining.
