AT&T requires a voice plan (minimum $40/month) and a smart phone data plan with an iPhone. Texting is optional and can be dropped at any time. However, if you're going to drop it, it's a good idea to have AT&T to block texting since you'll be charged for all texts you receive.
There are a number of texting apps as well as VoIP apps like Skype and Vonage in the app store.
No, you can switch to a Pay-per-use texting plan though. With our new App Store guidelines we now reject all VoIP and free texting apps because AT&T doesn't want them to be used as a free alternative.
I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
