I'm very sorry for your loss. No, I would not blame the dog. The dog is doing what he has been bred to do since at the least, the 1700's.
What people don't understand is the dachshund is a superior hunter, they are also fearless and even the most poorly bred funky dachshund will stay have prey drive. The bird flapping his wings and/or flying, would most definately set off the drive. No, I wouldn't love the dog any less, he's a dog and did what instinct told him to do.
Crap...I'm sorry for your loss. I'd be sick to my stomach over that. I have always had a large collection of exotic animals...snakes, lizards, birds, ridiculous things, I even have a stingray now...but I've never had the misfortune of something that bad happening (I had one of my dogs somehow get into my reptile room and CHEW on a Bell's Hingeback Tortoise I had owned for 7 years, I was very unhappy about that, but the tortoise was fine minus some scratch marks on it's carapace).
I didn't love the dog less, I was furious and sad to think about what the tortoise went through, but what happened happened. I just felt like I had to accept it for what it was and be more careful next time (bought and installed a deadbolt high on the door, no more issues). All you can do is accept the situation for what it is, move on, and count it as a lesson learned or something that couldn't have been stopped.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
