I am not a parent, but the only person I want to kiss on the lips is Mrs Squeeky, for everyone else, family or friend it's the cheek.
I think it's a cultural thing passed down through generations. My dad's side were lip kissers (with everyone), my mom's were cheek.
While it is cultural to some, I would prefer on cheek if it is not a cultural thing among parents to children.
I think it's inappropriate for parents to kiss their children on the lips. It sends the wrong message to the child, as in kissing relatives (especially relatives of the opposite sex). Sex offenders are usually people the child knows; often, a family member.
And then, if you want to go into the spreading of germs, catching colds, etc., that is a secondary issue.
We always just kissed on the cheek. I think I would feel strange kissing on the lips.
I cheek kiss, but I've accidentally gotten a few lip kisses because she turns her head too fast. I've known lots of families who lip kiss though. Not my thing.
I grew up in a family of lip kissers, well the females will kiss the younger ones on the lips but the guys will definitely not, either not kiss at all or forehead or cheek. It's just affection and nothing sexual about it, but as I grew older I would no longer allow being kissed on the lips by anyone but lovers. Now if there's people that kiss their children on the lips for a long duration, you know, longer than 1/3rd of a second, then there's probably something weird going on.
When I have kids I definitely will not kiss on the lips, I mean my mouth has been places, cheek only.

It sends very wrong signals. Especially if your cousin, is the same age as you and is the opposite sex. Bleh!
I don't think parents, or family members should do that.
I grew up with a combination of both. I used to hate it as a kid, but I guess now thinking back on it, as I got older the kisses started moving from lips to cheeks. I now have my own kids, 1 boy 1 girl, and I kiss them on the lips, but ive noticed I am the only one, not their dad or any grandparents.
My son, 3 yrs old, already tells me "on the cheek mommy, im not a baby". Its how I grew up. On the germs factor....lip kissing is worse, but believe me cheeks are no better, if you are truely worried about the spread of germs, I suggest no kissing at all, anywhere you kiss someone or someone kisses you they are transfering germs to your skin, you will inadvertantly touch this area with your hands and oops, you touch your own mouth or lips...germs still transfered.
But to not get too into it, yes lip kissing spreads germs worse.
Question for you parents of grown children...
