Given that you will be in Japan for a year and you are already used to big city life, the choice is not hard at all - Tokyo wins, hands down. Kanazawa is a very nice place to visit - and you should, for at least 2 days - and the point that there is only Kenrokuen to see is total crap. It is also not in "northern Japan" at all - and if you have a chance to go see the Tohoku region and Hokkaido, you should do that too.
But there are 3 good reasons to make it Tokyo - 1) It'll take you months to explore just Tokyo itself - and there is far more to see in the area - Nikko, Yokohama, Kamakura, Hakone, the Fuji 5 Lakes area, Kusatsu, Karuizawa, Kawagoe, Izu and so on. 2) Being in Japan on a student precludes you from using nearly all the rail passes - with one big exception - the Tokyo Wide Pass, which allows you to see all the above very cheaply compared to regular fare. http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2361_06.ht... 3) Kanazawa is not near any big airport.
From Tokyo you can fly across the country for peanuts on a low cost carrier like Jet Star, Peach, and Vanilla Air. There are dirt cheap fares to other Asian countries as well. Would you like to spend a weekend in Hong Kong paying just $66 for air fare one way?
You can, and do a lot more.
Kanazawa is a local city in northern Japan. If you want to enjoy your private life more, Tokyo is better. And Kanagawa is covered with snow in winter.
If you do not like snow and cold climate, Kanazawa is not for you. If you do, Kanazawa is better. Addition: To the person who commented, when we use the word?
(northern Japan) in Japan, it often includes Toyama, Niigata and Ishikawa (Kanazawa). The word? Is defined not only by latitude but also by customary factors.
We also have a word? (hokuriku) which means Toyama, Ishikawa, Niigata, etc. This has the kanji?(north). So you are saying Japan should not use the word?
For Toyama, etc just because it does not have high latitude?
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
