The deadliest war in human history is estimated (after WWII) to be a Chinese civil war... (Religious question alert! ) >> ...that took place in the 1850s onward, led by a man that considered himself the younger brother of Jesus Christ. How can Christians consider their religion non-violent when this war which promoted Christianity killed an estimated 20 -30 million people?

It is known officially as the Taiping Rebellion, or translated, the "Rebellion of Great Peace". Is that an oxymoron or what? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiping_RebellionBe nice to each other in your comments!

Jesus actually warned about this... He said many would come in s name (and many claiming to be m) and we were not to pay attention to them. One can live in a garage, but that does not make one a car. Christianity is a name bandied about by quite a few people, many of whom are totally clueless regarding what it is.

Regardless of anyone calling themselves the younger brother of Jesus (and they all died before the first century was out! ), what he said or did has zero, nada, nothing to do with following Jesus, or being a real Christian. Here are some directions we are given in the Bible, if this is of any help: From Paul’s letter to the Romans: Love must be sincere.

Hate what is evil, cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.

Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God’s people who are in need.

Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.

Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.Do not repay anyone evil for evil.

Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ’It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord. On the contrary: ’If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.

In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.

The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong.

Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. For he is God’s servant to do you good.

But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment, but also because of conscience.

This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor. Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law.

That is from the end of the twelfth and beginning of the thirteenth chapter of Paul’s letter to the Romans. Now, you tell me, are those who wage war in the name of Christ following Christ really? Were the Crusades Christian?

I say no. I do not even think the American Revolution was Christian, and I am benefitting from its results, living here in the USA. There is no claim by anyone in the Bible that all rulers are beneficent.

We all know better. But we who are Christians also know that it is true that, as Paul also wrote: "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him and who have been called according to his purpose. " I think, if you ignore the times "Christian" is used and pay attention to those who are actually followers of Chirst, you will see what Christian really means.

I think -- no, I know -- that you will find that the people who are truly born again in Christ and following m are a lot quieter than what you hear about in the news, or, certainly, from televangelists! I grew up in the fifties when the title "Communist" ruined businesses and people. In this case yes, Communism was the enemy, but misusing the name was no more right then than misusing the name Christian is now.

On the other hand, if you are an enemy of real Christianity, what better way to throw it into disrepute than claim the name and proceed to commit atrocities? Lets say that you consider yourself a cat lover. And you read an article in the paper reporting that a fellow purported cat lover is now in jail because they professed that they loved cats so much that he/she killed them for their beautiful wonderous pelts. What would you say to someone who read said article and subsequently decided that all cat lovers were deranged.

You would probably claim vehemently that this killer was indeed no cat lover at all and had a mentally deranged image of what it means to love cats. This silly example should help illustrate how muslims and christians feel every time they read about some fanatical nut that kills in the name of their religion. My roomate of four years in college was/is a muslim and would get terribly angry when hearing about some new suicide bombing.

He felt that these evil men and women had hijacked his religion of peace and given others fodder to denigrate his faith.

Turn the other cheek It is easy to look throughout history and find examples of Christian brutality. The Crusades and the inquisition are the ones mentioned most frequently. But the question that has to asked (and answered) is this?

Does the Bible teach brutality? Does that Bible encourage its followers to kill unbelievers? The answer is clearly no.

There are no teachings in the Bible that remotely suggest Christians should engage in any type of warfare as a way to convert those who do not believe. In fact, it teaches quite the opposite. The Bible wants believers to be a good witness. To forgive those who hurt them.

To love their enemies. To turn the other cheek. This is not suggest that Christians should passively watch their loved one brutalized and not defend their home.

It also does not suggest that Christians should refuse to join the military. But this is not done in the name of Christ. It is done in obedience to the laws of the land. In the final analysis, Christianity should not be judged solely on the actions of those professing to believe, especially those whose actions are counter to the teachings of the Bible.

A Christian needs to be obedient to the Word of God.1 John says that this is how we know that a person is a believer - because they LOVE one another. If there is no love, then there is no obedience and obedience is how we know that some one loves God and follows .

The same way that most moderate Muslims believe that the Holy Q'ran does not condone violence except in ..... self-defense. I'm not responsible for radical misinterpretations by others of Jesus Christ's message of universal love.

Sameold People have been murdering each other in the name of religion since the first charlatan dreamed up the first invisible oogly boogy to justify his actions. In itself, that says a lot about Homo Sapiens but nothing about the supernatural. The antics of the believers does not have any impact of the validity of the underlying belief.

Just as, today, the looniness of the Christian Fundies doesn't mean that the particular god that they believe in doesn't exist, it just means that they are nutz.

" "OK HERE IS THE "BIG" QUESTION FOLKS. GET OUT YOUR HISTORY BOOKS, WHAT WAS THE TURNING POINT OF THE CIVIL WAR?" "Religion & Spirituality" "I am taking a poll on this question, "What is the difference between spirituality and religion? "" (10 answers) "Your 'Change category' does not work.

You put my 'computer' question into 'Religion & Spirituality.'" "Why are there so many religious questions included under HISTORY? Shouldn't there be a major category for RELIGION?

Ok here is the "big" question folks. Get out your history books, what was the turning point of the civil war?

Your 'Change category' does not work. You put my 'computer' question into 'Religion & Spirituality.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
