The Electoral College is the method set up by our Founding Fathers to keep elections fair. If it were not for the Electoral College then it is actually possible that a President could be elected by having only New York, Texas, California and a couple of more states elect the President. Therefore the rest of the country could vote and in actuality their vote would be for nothing.
The College has never voted against the popular vote of their State. Therefore the President is elected in effect by the popular vote, it is just broken down by State. Again, this is what protects the nations elections from being controlled by only a few states that have the dominant population base.
