The light fixture in my kitchen is acting funny, the fluorescent bulbs won't fully illuminate, what to do?

I've replaced the bulbs twice, and both times it just comes on dimly. I thought it was the bulbs at first, but now I'm thinking the fixture needs to be replaced. Is this true? Tell me what you know about this.

Change the "starter" in the unit Somewhere by the bulb/s - maybe under the cover plate - there's what they call a "starter" - it's a short round alumminum(prob spelled wrong) cylinder (like a 1inch stack of dimes size). When you find it -- push it down and turn it to remove it -- go to Home Depot or any other place and buy a replacement. Your problem's solved (you probably didn't need to replace the bulbs - hope you saved them....

It may be the starter. To replace the starter you may have to take the fixture down to remove the old one and put in a new one. Sometimes the starter switch is located on one side or the other of the fixture in asy reach.

Here is a website that shows what the starter switch does and how it looks: home.howstuffworks.com/fluorescent-lamp4... New fixtures don't have starters anymore and are more efficient to run. You may want to think about replacing the fixture all together. Good luck and I wish you well my friend.

Ballast failure. Would be my diagnosis. Here are your options: buy a replacement ballast of the same type, which is probably what is called a "magnetic ballast." this will light up the same tubes that you have.

Buy an electronic ballast to replace the old ballast. This will take a different tube: for a 4' fixture, these are 32 watt t-8 tubes. I recommend this, if the fixture housing still looks good.

These ballasts perform much better than the old magnetic ones. Buy a new fixture to replace the old one. Again, I recommend buying one with an electronic ballast.

The reason for doing this would be if you are tired of looking at the old one, or want one with more tubes to get more light out of it. Call an electrician, and have him come in and change out your fluorescent fixture to a set of recessed can lights. This is the option you use if you just don't like fluorescent lighting, and have a few hundred dollars lying around the house that you don't know what to do with.

If you are confident with following diagrams, you should have no trouble changing your own ballast, or you can call an electrician to do it for you. Sources: changed a few of 'em .

1 It might need a new ballast. Sometimes you can get them at a reasonable price, but for some fixtures they cost about as much as a whole new fixture.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
