The so-called "Oprah effect" doesn't seem to work in politics - polls say her campaigning for Barack Obama backfired. Polls released on 1/9/08 (Lifetime Networks and Zogby International) showed Ms. Winfrey made little difference in the way women are looking at the candidates.
The polls showed that, with some groups of women, Oprah's efforts actually cost Obama votes. The pollsters interviewed 500 New Hampshire women -- to look at the views in this early primary state -- and 1,000 other women across the nation to determine their perspectives on the upcoming presidential election. In New Hampshire, pollsters found one-third of the women under 30 said Oprah "stumping actually made them less likely to support Obama."
Seventy-three percent of the other women said it made no difference to their campaign choices at all.So...........the much-touted "Oprah effect" doesn't work in politics, it appears. Could it be because so many women work outside the home, and never (or rarely ever) watch daytime TV? I think it's a little early to say it "doesn't work" or "won't work. " New Hampshire is a single state, and a small one at that. It's also not one that anyone would consider Obama's -- or Winfrey's -- base.
New Hampshire is a very different state than Iowa -- they have a tradition of picking different winners than the Iowa caucus. One other point I would raise: the New Hampshire polls were famously wrong in picking the winners of the primary this year. So why is the poll you cited any more credible?
That said, while I think celebrities have the same rights as the rest of us to voice their opinions and stump for the candidates they support, it's hard to imagine that any of them would ever hold that much sway with the American public. Almost any celebrity that stirs the passions on one side of the political spectrum will almost certainly serve as a rallying cry for those opposed their particular viewpoint.
If I were running for public office, I sure would like to have Oprah on MY SIDE. I have found that polls will say anything the pollster wants it to say and that pundits will say anything they are PAID to SAY. I don't give much credence to the questionable theory that Oprah's endorsement has hurt Sen.
Obama's campaign in even the slightest little bit.
I think its because alot of woman would rather see another woman in office. I think its because alot of woman would rather see another woman in office. I watch Oprah every day, and while a lot of time she has some good advice and I buy things she says, I still would rather see a woman president.
Not to pull the race card, but you know shes just tryin to 'hook a brotha' up by supporting him. Sources: My opinion .
I must admit that I'm an Oprah fan. . But I don't agree with her on this one.
And, her opinion did not change mine although I really do love her. I've even been to her show.It was a really big deal in my world. I'd vote for her in a minute if she ran for President but I'm not voting for B.O. And she isn't going to change my mind on this one.
I'm actually very concerned about what he would do if he did become president. I'm not feeling good about the B.O. So perhaps it worked in Iowa, but didn't work in New Hampshire. This is a big "So What"? People should chose candidates based on other factors than celebrity endorsements.
I don't recall Oprah campaigning in New Hampshire. In any case, you've got a statistically invalid sample. There has been one caucus, and one primary. So perhaps it worked in Iowa, but didn't work in New Hampshire.

POLITICS and the pulpit... in the wake of Barack Obama's minister's sermon... do you feel that politics should...
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
