Time warner says my modem is fine and connected but my computer won't connect to the internet?

Time warner says my modem is fine and connected but my computer won't connect to the internet... a tech came out to fix my cable (pixelating bad) and then he left without it fixed and now my internet doesn't work. I have called time warner twice but they say everything on their side works fine and told me to change the ethernet cords.. so basically all the sudden it magically stops working. Lots of possibilities! Okay, let's assume for a moment that the problem truly is coming from somwhere "inside. " What are the possibilities?

First, the cable modem itself could be bad. However, Time Warner says no. They seem to be getting a good signal level (better than -30) and a good downstream speed (presumably 1Mbps or higher).

Next, it could be the Ethernet cable between the cable modem and whatever is next in the chain (router, computer, etc. ). Let's assume that it is a computer. The first thing to try is get to a DOS prompt (Start | Accessories | Command Prompt) and then type the following command: ipconfig and press Enter.

What you should get is something that looks like this: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : IP Address.. ... ... ... . : 10.0.0.249 Subnet Mask .. ... .

.. ... : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway ... ... ... : 10.0.0.254 If you see no numbers such as this at all and, instead, see only Media State . .. ... ... .. : Media disconnected then that indicates that your cable is either not fully seated at one (or both) end(s) or that the cable is bad. What you need to do is make sure that the cable is properly seated at both ends or replace the cable.

If there is a router between the computer and the cable modem, then you need to make sure that the cable from the computer to the router and the cable from the router to the cable modem are both good. The easiest way to do this is to try hooking both from the set of ports on the back of the router that are grouped together to the computer (one cable at a time should be attached to the computer) and see if IPConfig shows data such as what I've shown above.(The numbers could be in the 192.168.x. X range instead of the shown 10.x.x.

X range above but that's fine. If they start with 169.254, however, that is not good and something is wrong somewhere.) Once both cables test good and you have them properly attached (the one that goes to the cable modem should be attached to the one connection on the back of the router that is sitting by itself and is probably labelled as WAN or Internet or Uplink or something similar), then you should be able to reboot the computer and get on the Internet just fine. If there is still a problem, then you may need to fool the cable company into thinking that your router is your computer with something called MAC Address Cloning.

Though cable companies don't often admit it (for some strange reason), they frequently set up their systems with security based on MAC addresses learned from each connection. Thus, when you have had your computer hooked up directly to the cable modem and then suddenly get a different computer or put a router into the loop, the Internet connection may be denied. What you need to do is tell the router to use the MAC address from your computer.

Assuming that the computer in use is the same one that used to be directly connected to the modem, it's just a simple process of getting into the router's configuration function, finding the MAC Address Cloning function, and then having it read the MAC address off your computer and saving it in its configuration. More often than not, that will solve the problem. There could be other problems with the router as well if the router is new and never been used on this connection before but those are more properly addressed by a local consultant as he will be able to examine the problem more easily.

However, they could be incorrect settings for the type of connection used by the cable company (I've never seen a cable company use anything other than DHCP, it doesn't mean that they can't), problems with auto-negotiation of the WAN port speed, or something else entirely. Now, let's assume that Time Warner is blowing smoke as the local cable company (Sunflower Cablevision aka Sunflower Broadband) likes to do here in northeastern Kansas. What could the issues be in that case?

Well, they are also quite numerous: bad infrastructure router, bad buried/overhead cable, interference from industrial equipment nearby, etc.In my time in this area of Kansas, I have seen each of these happen. The interference was actually caused by a piece of heavy machinery that was operating next door to a client and it was actually in the process of failing but no other symptoms had been noticed yet by the user of said equipment. The only way it got tracked down was by me going out to run some tests and then pass those along to both the owner of the equipment and Sunflower.

The machine was repaired and all was fine. There was another time that a cable was bad and Sunflower refused to acknowledge it until I proved to them that the situation was worse during a rainstorm and improved once the sun came out and helped to dry out the drenched copper. Eventually the cable completely failed and that caused everyone's cable Internet connections and TVs to go out, so they had to fix it.

The final issue was caused by a poorly configured router. I tracked down the offending router and told them what needed to be done to fix the problem but they refused to do so until about two days later when the problem was experienced by a large portion of the local service area. At that point, they reconfigured the router as I suggested and the problem went away.At no time would they admit that they had a problem that they had to resolve.

It just was "magical" that the problems went away. You may run into the same type of situation with Time Warner out your way. I hope all this information helps.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
