Two women have some age-related hearing loss & want subtitles on their DVD's. The husband & boyfriend dislike subtitles. Both are ordinarily considerate people, but seem irritated by the women's wishes.

Neither man has ever volunteered to activate the subtitles even when they have the controls. Even though the resistance is subtle & consists mostly of "not doing," the women feel reluctant to request the remotes so they can activate the subtitles. What's going on?

Why are these men ungracious in this situation? Any ideas? Asked by CALGal 52 months ago Similar questions: women age related hearing loss subtitles DVD's husband boyfriend dislike Lifestyle > Relationships.

You have several choices, depending on your position of Power in this situation... I’m a fifty-something male with bilateral tinnitus. That’s like having a teakettle going off next to both ears almost constantly. My hearing has been degrading over the last twenty-odd years. So I am very familiar with your situation.

My spouse is the ’clicker keeper’ in the family and has always been sensitive to my difficulty hearing the TV. She always seemed more agreeable to do captions rather than have the sound blaring loudly. Now she also has hearing deficit, but not as bad as me.

She doesn’t object to the captions being on. My teenage sons are more like your hubby-boyfriend combo. They hog the HD controls and will grudgingly give way to Dad’s request for captions after I remind them who pays the bills and who paid for the TV.

(if you or your friend have that kind of leverage, I suggest you enforce it, too ) If the shoe were on the other foot, you know it’d be different...I’ve lots more ideas about what to do: You say these guys are normally considerate, but evidently they have ’control’ issues. I suggest each female partner kindly and not adversarially inquire (separately) as to why they aren’t responsive to their sweetheart’s needs. What could be happening is merely a control issue.

They simply do not want to give up control of even the display features of the TV. If that’s the case, you may have a lot of negotiation ahead, especially if you have no ’pays the bills ’ leverage. You could engage them in an experiment.

Have these guys turn on the radio to a static/white noise frequency in the same room as the TV and see if they can follow the program for thirty minutes. I’ll bet they don’t last five. That might increase their sensitivity .

If ’pays the bills ’, sensitive inquiry, and scientific proof don’t budge these two, then you just might have to throw in the towel and get a wireless headphone set up for yourself. As a matter of fact, I have two Sony MDR-IF240RK Wireless Headphone Systems that I employ when I do not have the caption option on what I’m viewing. Following is a link and ’widgets’ for similarproducts.

, and I encourage you to read the customer reviews, especially on something like wireless headphones. (I happen to agree with that 8/6/06 ’jimnypivo’ review myself). http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/customer-reviews/B000095SB4/sr=1-3/qid=1188645260/ref=cm_rev_sort/002-1496092-2392817?customer-reviews.sort_by=byExactRating_4&s=electronics&x=12&y=12 There are two types of sets: Those that run off FM (900 MHz) frequencies, and you have infa-red (IR)technology.

FM/Mhz is best in rural areas, or if you have little or no outside FM interference---wireless routers or telephones. Infared (my choice) works fine in urban areas where the FM waves are too crowded to get a free frequency. The only downsides are that the range for IR is about 20 feet, and IR operates via line-of-sight to the transmitter.

A chair, wall, or lock of hair between the transmitter and the receiver can block out the signal. Good luck, CalGirl. Let us know which of these suggestions you employed and if they worked.

Hope my contributions are helpful to your situation. Other option I personally can't explain why they are being inconsiderate or ungracious. However, from my own experience, family members with hearing loss are given their own wireless headsets and can set the volume as they like. These are a lot cheaper than they used to be and work quite well.

They are also useful if you want to watch a late movie but don't want to wake up everyone else in the house. In this case, you can mute the TV and just use the headphones. If the boot was on the other foot there appears no doubt that the subtitles would be on with no consultation. I suggest that you ask them to put cotton wool in their ears for a week to hear what the world is like for you.De the remote controls so that you have possession of them and therefore control of the subtiltles. Ask repeatedly for the sound to be increased to a level that is suitable for you.

Stop feeling reluctant to ask for the subtitles to be put on, suggest they have forgotten to put them on.Do either of these men expect you to be at home with them when the DVD's are on? If so make sure you go out, or are not there, when asked why tell them you are not prepared to sit and watch something you could enjoy if it were not for his selfishness in not putting the subtitles on for you.

For the life of me, I have never understood this aversion... In the case of your friends, I think the husband and boyfriend are being downright inconsiderate. I happen to like a lot of foreign films that require the use of subtitles. When I have tried to recommend these to my male friends, I have been puzzled by how many times I have heard "oh, I couldn't watch that, I hate subtitles."

Honestly, I don't know what the big deal is. I guess *possibly* the guys could think it is annoying to see subtitles on a film they can easily hear, but as I said, I can't comprehend the insensitivity to others. Sources: my brain .

They probably find it a distraction... At least, that's what I believe is the reason for folks questioning us when we have the subtitles on. My family (husband, kids, & I) really likes them because it isn't always easy to hear what is being said otherwise, but I guess some people don't want something scrolling along the bottom or top of the screen that might make them miss what's going on in the middle! However, when they are really needed, as in the case of the two ladies mentioned, it doesn't make sense that these gentlemen, who in other ways seem considerate, would deliberately deny them like that.

Sounds to me like the women need to sit down & have a heart-to-heart with their men! .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
