Usually Congress decided how much was the "territory. " And later, the territory became the state. Thus, initially, the borders were recogizable features such as rivers, giving the jagged outline to states such as Virginia and Kentucky.
Initially, the first 13 colonies were given actual slices, and I've seen maps that designated those slices with a Western border of the Pacific Ocean (they thought it was nearer to the Appalachians then. ) Obviously, those were whacked off at varying points. And later, when encountering no discernable geography (the Dakotas, the Great Southwest Desert, etc.), Congress went with latitude (which is why a place like "Four Corners" exists.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
