So far nobody knows what a Hokie is. Is it someones last name or what. Where did the name come from.

I'm just curious. Some football teams have names that is easy to explain. Like Baltimore Colts.

Vikings etc. I know those are NFL teams. But even some college teams have names that are easy to explain. But no one I know has any idea what a Hokie is.

The official university school colors - Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange - also were introduced in 1896. The colors were chosen by a committee because they made a ’unique combination’ not worn elsewhere at the time.2 The mascot is the HokieBird, a turkey-like creature.

The teams were originally known as the "Fighting Gobblers," and the turkey motif was retained despite the name change. In 2007 there was a full length documentry done called Hokie Nation, the school has great spirit. The turkey was the mascot and the "yell for spirit" was "old hokie" it started in 1896.

When they changed from "fighting gobblers" to "hokie bird" they kept the turkey logo. The turkey evolved from 1896-1987 to the hokiebird you see today. In 2003 and 2004 the hokiebird appeared on animal planet with real turkeys discussing the up coming Thanksgiving holidays.
