The Geneva Convention Laws of War were formed in a different time, when battles, real and potential, were between nations. World opinion could be somewhat effectively brought down on a violator, as the international deliberative body had relatively few members and could vote with some likelihood of producing a means of carrying out action against a violator. But now the doors are essentially wide open, with dozens of nations in the UN who were/are guilty of the very acts they may be asked to condemn, and such nations often join together to produce absurd outcomes that would have been unthinkable in earlier years.
So now we have an absolute mess with state-sponsored terrorism funding groups without uniforms who claim no nationality striking populations here and there and who hold little or no adherence to any formal convention or rules of war. Back when our nation was a great military power, and was willing to USE that power and other nations generally feared and respected such power, we could accept unilateral restrictions, even when other nations were sometimes less circumspect, but that no longer adheres. Indeed, we have seen how, in so many ways, restricting ourselves has opened door after door to those who eagerly wait for us to close our eyes and to voluntarily yield methods and means of defending ourselves and our allies.
Now we are turning ourselves into a police state, spying on our own citizenry, reducing our own Constitutional rights, all in the name of "security" from those whose constant attacks have brought us to this point because we have failed to effectively take the fight to them.
Lol while the rest of the world shakes its head a whole generation of Americans now think human rights don't matter in war anymore damn .. the end of the empire is truly here EDIT well, yes - extrajudicial killings are commonplace during war that doesn't mean that human rights shouldnt apply.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
