North America and Asia were connected by a broad swath of land we call Beringia until about 10,000 years ago when the rising seas from the melting of the continental glaciers of the last Ice Age separated them by connecting the Arctic and Pacific Oceans with the Bering Strait. Nomadic hunters could easily have walked from Northeast Asia (Siberia) to Alaska especially following the coast and hunting marine mammals and shellfish. Genetic markers indicate that Native Americans share ancestry with northern Asian groups and there are cultural similarities as well, in things like skin covered frame boats and hunting technologies.
