According to the California Driver's Handbook, issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles, you may obtain your learner's permit without prior driver's ed training at the age of 15 1/2. However, you may not obtain your driver's license until you reach your 18th birthday (as you still must have your permit for six months or until you reach 18). Actually you can get your license when youre 16 after 6 months of having your permit.
