If you are looking to get in to photography as a serious hobby and want to purchase a dSLR, I always suggest to my students the Canon Rebel. It can be fully automatic or fully manual. I have always felt that this camera is the perfect transition between a point and shoot camera to an SLR (camera with detachable lenses).
The Rebel is the easiest to learn and once you do, it will give you nearly everything a professional camera will do for you.
Well, in general, I would suggest a compact camera with full manual mode. As it's a compact, you can find a "non-expensive" one easily. And the manual mode usually gives you a lot of freedom.
More specifically, I personally suggest you to check out Canon Powershot cameras. I have an A590, and I love it. (I don't know if it's still being sold though) Also, there is an unofficial but harmless software, called CHDK, which works with most of the Canon Powershot cameras, and can even get you more functions.
Check out these sites, if you're interested. canoncompact.com/ chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
