One way to save a significant amount is to either not order alcohol, or to only order one drink rather than several drinks or a bottle. Depending on how long you go out for, this can save you $50 or more in a single sitting. I used to always go out with a friend whose bill was larger than mine.

He simply drank more than I did. Over the course of a few months, my total savings compared to his bill added up to more than $300. You don't have to cut out alcohol to enjoy dinner, and I still order premium brands.It sounds strange, but the honest-to-goodness solution is to just drink slower.

Value menu. More restaurants are offering value menu options with smaller portions. TGI Fridays has the "Right portion, right price menu".

The side benefit of the smaller portions is they are really closer to an acceptable portion size. At Burger King for about $3 you can get a whopper jr, value fry & value soda. If you drink diet your meal is under 500 calories.
