My family typically does not get to vacation often. We try to do extras during the week, that often do not cost too much. Once a week we have family movie night. My husband, the kids and I pick a movie from On Demand for just $5 and make snacks and enjoy a great movie.
Once a week my family has game night, where we play family games. Once a week we do order out and have something delivered. Usually Chinese food or pizza.
I wish we had extra money for vacations, but with the economy the way it is, just being able to pay for things that break down, or college and schoolong for our kids usually breaks the bank.
I would rather go without a lot of meals out and save up for a vacation. I'm not going to remember all of the meals I had, but I certainly won't forget a trip to another country. In practice, I do a little of both, I guess.
We eat out occasionally, and I enjoy a pretty expensive hobby. But I do live a bit simply, to keep my savings up, and when I can, I love to travel. Experiences are a lot more important to me than stuff, so it's fairly easy for me to buy mostly only necessities.
If the choice is a house full of useless knickknacks and a weekly meal out or two weeks in Europe, that's a simple choice.
In practice, I buy things I like and don't take vacations. I was hoping to answer this question from a more neutral standpoint, but perhaps my behavior is selling me out. I know vacations are important and that it's not to hard to save up for one, but I just don't actually do it.
I think part of the reason for this is that I view many of the extras I buy (clothes, art, etc. ) as permanent while a vacation will end as soon as I fly back home. Also, short of cool pictures on Facebook, people aren't going to be able to see my vacation or appreciate it. I bought a new bust (statue) this past week.
It's always going to be around and I'll be enjoying it for years to come. Travel just seems too temporary sometimes.
I need to go out every weekend. If I have spare money, I will travel but if not I prefer to spend my money to get some refreshing every week. I would go crazy if I have to wait a year before I relax and unwind in some way especially with the kind of stress I am under right now.
I do try to balance it out and not spend every penny to go out on weekends. Besides, sometiems I can't find anyone to travel with me, so I might not be able to travel at all.
Average amount Americans planned to spend on summer vacation (according to a Visa study): $1,654. Since it says "summer vacation" I assume this is not total vacation spending for the year, but it's just for the summer time vacations Americans take. This is way above what we spend on our average summer vacation.
In fact, most years we spend $500 or so for the FULL YEAR -- most of it spent on gas driving to see family and friends. That said, every ten years or so we have a "big" vacation (like our trip this year to Disney) and we go way over $500. Still, even with this averaged in, we're still at less than $1,000 a year over the past ten years.
What do you spend on your vacations? Do you just take them in the summer or are there other times you travel?
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
