Glad you are healthy. The other one is plaque in the arteries - from cholesterol. There is no way to know if someone has it either.

Guybee's answer is very concise and right on. Totally out of the blue, I found myself dealing with blood pressure issues last winter and he's also right, it's something that can sneak up on you. Other than some mild sense that I wasn't feeling right, I felt fine and, in fact, went to the doctor for something else entirely unrelated. It most definitely took me aback to see how high my bp was, especially since not only have I largely been blessed with good health all my life, but the only bp instance in my family came via marriage, not blood lines.

In any case, I was lucky, it was quickly brought under control, but I did a ton of research in the process and will try to find some of my links I bookmarked and share as I can. The first and probably most helpful thing I did, tho', other than finally getting off my rear and back to exercising -- writers tend to sit for long periods of time, alas -- was to limit my salt intake. I don't follow the diet linked below, but do follow the spirit of it in that I've made serious efforts to limit my salt intake and up my exercise, so that and possibly meds are good starts.

mayoclinic.com/health/high-blood-pressur... a basic Mayo Clinic article on the topic but it hits home on something I forgot to mention: Read your food labels. I've never denied being a salt-aholic but, man, I was floored when I started paying attention and looking at labels. I knew I was using more salt than I needed (but, dang, it had me hooked!) but until I started label reading had no clue how much I was sucking into my system every day.

I was blaming it all on my addiction to chips and salty junk food. It's really amazing how much salt/sodium is packed into the most benign sounding foods, tho', so read those labels!

Thanx uve been very helful, appreciate it Emmanuel 14 months ago .

Yeah, diet and exercise can help lower your blood pressure. Usually doctors will give you a couple of months to see if you can lower it yourself. The number one thing to do is to lose weight.

The body has to pump your blood harder when there's more to pump. Stop salting your food. Salt allows you to retain more water, and one place the water goes is into your bloodstream.

Not everyone is sensitive to salt, but if you are, you need to stop salting food. Try to get more potassium. The potassium will counteract the salt.

Try to get 7 hours of sleep a night. If you're always tired, your body try to counter that by raising a lot of levels of different things in your body including blood pressure. Exercise more.

Lack for physical activity causes the heart to work harder. Cut out smoking. It's no good for a lot of reason.

Also while a drink or two a day can lower your blood pressure, three or more can raise it. So no excessive drinking. As for what you can take, you can also try CoQ10.

Some studies have shown a lowering of blood pressure by about 6 points on the top number and 3 points on the lower number.Garlic. Several studies have shown a significant reduction in blood pressure with simple garlic. Hawthorn knocked 3 points off of patients in a UK study.

Fish oil in several studies showed a lowering of blood pressure as did taking folic acid, which is a B vitamin. So you can try these things. Keep in mind too that the thinking about high blood pressure has changed a bit.

The death rate of slightly higher blood pressure is almost the same rate as "normal" blood pressure, so a lot of doctors just watch you if you have slightly higher blood pressure. Hope this helps.

Stop smoking and reduce your sodium intake. If you have high blood pressure and smoke, then trying to reduce it is like trying to get rid of a headache by banging your forehead on a wall.
