Cold, ruthless, enigmatic, this Russian-born British agent radically transformed modern espionage techniques and set the mold for a new kind of secret agent-the super spy. Favorite PBS shows are the "back in time" specials I enjoy watching the "back in time" series specials on PBS. They are all available for sale on the PBS Web Site. Several are also available in public libraries (some VHS and some DVD).
Not sure the video rental places would carry such high quality educational vides (no slam intended). Call your local video rental place and ask though. Netflix might have them.
pbs.org The PBS "back in time" series shows places a modern family back in time and educates them on the rules and mores for living in specific time period. Then they LIVE it for real. Examples: Texas Ranch House - A family from modern times goes back to the life style of "home on the range" type living and hires ranch hands to lasso cattle and bring them to market. No electricity, running water, refrigeration, television....well you get the idea.
The object is to see if a family or group of people born in modern times has what it takes to survive back in that time period. The narration and educational value of the shows is great. pbs.org/wnet/ranchhouse/ 1900 House - A modern family learns what it takes to live in the Victorian era in the 1900's.
pbs.org/wnet/1900house/ Frontier House - Modern families experience life on the American Frontier. This particular series was my favorite. Each family is given a cabin and a cow.
And oh yeah....make sure you chop enough wood, so you don't freeze to death in the winter. pbs.org/wnet/frontierhouse/ There are other similar ones like the above centering on different times in history. If your family is interested in participating, you can apply on line!
(not me...I must have running water and a flushing toilet! ) Here's a complete listing of all the video DVD's available from PBS (you can shop online at their website) http://www.shoppbs.org/family/index.jsp?categoryId=1413205 Nice to see that others appreciate educational television as much as I do..
