The Cove" is a great documentary film about the dolphin trade and dolphin slaughter in Japan and "China Blue" that exposes the inhumane conditions of garment factory workers in China.
I absolutely loved the Planet Earth series. Also think March of the Penguins, The Cove and Bowling for Columbine were amazing. As for more experimental style documentaries, I love Baraka and Latcho Drom.

I thought that "The Thin Blue Line" was good, and that "Planet Earth" was jaw-droppingly great. And c'mon, who doesn't like the fortitude of the birdies in "The March of the Penguins?

If Only I Were an Indian" -- It's a great film about a subculture in the Czech Republic that follow the customs of First Nations people. They live in tepees and partake in Native rituals- it's really interesting and kind of bizarre.
